USGS MCS 2021: world sulfur production about 80 Mt; Canada about 4.9 Mt

The United States was about 8.1 Mt. Import-source statistics for 2017-20 already showed Canada supplying roughly 73 percent of US elemental sulfur imports.

USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2022, covering 2021, estimated world sulfur production near 80 million tonnes, with Canada about 4.9 million tonnes and the United States about 8.1 million tonnes. Import-source statistics for 2017-20 already showed Canada supplying roughly 73 percent of US elemental sulfur imports, framing Alberta and Vancouver as a structural North American swing source. The PDF is at https://pubs.usgs.gov/periodicals/mcs2022/mcs2022-sulfur.pdf.

MCS 2023 would put 2022 world about 82 million tonnes, Canada about 4.9 million, US about 8.6 million. MCS 2025 would put 2023 world about 85.8 million, Canada about 4.98 million. MCS 2026 would put 2024 world about 83.9 million, Canada about 5.06 million. The 4.9 million tonne 2021 Canada line is the recovered book that Vancouver's 2.29 million tonne trough and the 73 percent US import share had to live inside.

Alberta recovered sulfur still leaves mainly through the Vancouver stem. 2.29 million tonnes Pacific solid versus 4.9 million tonnes national recovery is molten rail, domestic use, and pad. The 73 percent US elemental import share for 2017-20 is the rail door in a table. MCS 2024 would later show 77 percent for 2019-22. MCS 2026 would show 53 percent for 2021-24. Different windows, Canada first in all of them. A Canada-US sulfur desk exists because of these percentages, even in a 2.29 million tonne Vancouver year.

Tampa beginning 2021 near about $69 per long ton, USGS, is the contract that 8.1 million tonne US production and Canadian rail delivered into at the open. Unit value would average about $92.30 for the year, from $24.60 in 2020. World 80 million tonnes is a Claus planet still healing from pandemic runs. It is not a 2022 spike planet yet. It is not a 2026 Hormuz planet.

Argus's just-over-3-million-tonne 2021 Gulf capacity forecast is the incremental supply on this 80 million tonne base. China's 40 percent production-growth call toward 2025 is the other increment. Canadian forming projects are granules from the existing 4.9 million tonnes, not a fifth million of Claus.

BC Insight's sour-gas decline and oil-sands offset is the geography inside Canada's 4.9 million tonnes. Fort McMurray upgrader sulfur concentrated logistics on remelt-form-rail-Vancouver. Heartland's tank and Sultran's gondolas are that concentration in assets. Licensed weekly grids are not restated.

Suncor's more than 800,000 tonnes a year marketable is the operator slice. USGS 4.9 million is the national slice. VFPA 2.29 million is the harbour slice. Three nested numbers, one 2021 file.

Figures follow USGS MCS 2022. World about 80 million tonnes and Canada about 4.9 million is the 2021 production chapter of the five-year corpus.
