Qatar QSP crashes to $77/t FOB in August from $428/t in July

Muntajat cut the Qatar Sulphur Price $351/t as Argus granular CFR China slumped to $95/t on 4 August after the phosphate export curb.

Muntajat set the August 2022 Qatar Sulphur Price at $77 per tonne FOB, down $351 per tonne from July's $428 per tonne. Argus granular CFR China slumped to $95 per tonne on 4 August as Chinese buyers pulled back from imports and turned to domestic sulfur after the phosphate export curb. May's QSP had been $460 per tonne FOB Ras Laffan and Mesaieed, with UAE OSP and Kuwait KSP at $470, in the 26 May Argus Sulphur sample. $428 in July to $77 in August is the Gulf producer-marker crash. It matches Vancouver from $478 toward under $65 and Middle East FOB averages from about $485 in June toward about $71 in early August, BC Insight. Licensed weekly grids are not restated. Alberta recovered sulfur still leaves mainly through Vancouver. A $351 per tonne Gulf cut in one month is the competing origin repricing. Canadian FOB had to follow or lose the residual Chinese bid. Canada's 71,000 tonnes into China in September, behind Korea and Iran, is that residual. First-half Canadian stems at $476-480 FOB were a different market.

China's July de-facto quota, DAP rates 40 to 50 percent at river ports and about 50 percent in Yunnan and Guizhou by end-July, is the policy behind $77 QSP. Buyers leaned on domestic sulfur. Import demand stayed selective. Huaxicun trading had already halted on 16 June. August physical CFR at $95 is the cash market without paper and without export DAP.

Tampa $352 in mid-July, USGS, had not yet reached $90. Molten contracts lag Gulf FOB markers. Mosaic's utilization cuts added US length into the same weeks. Two basins, one Chinese curb.

UAE production near 6.0 million tonnes in 2022, USGS, is the Gulf solid book QSP and OSP price. Barzan and Al Fadhili ramps had added incremental Gulf sulfur into the spike. August is those tonnes looking for a home at $77.

The $77 August QSP set up a volatile bounce, CFR China $197.50 on 12 December, then a 2023 cheap-import year. It did not restore $428. Affordability warnings in later 2026 copy start from remembering this $351 one-month cut.
