China sulfur benchmark steadies at 6,077 yuan as SunSirs flags phosphate run cuts

SunSirs' 21 October analysis keeps Shengyishe 基准 at 6,076.75 yuan per tonne after a 20.9 percent month slide and cites MAP/DAP operating rates just above 40 percent.

Chinese sulfur traders on 21 October weighed whether the mid-October break had finished against phosphate plant economics that still looked stressed on open commentary.

SunSirs' market analysis dated 21 October cited the national Shengyishe sulfur 基准价 at 6,076.75 yuan per metric tonne, unchanged from the 20 October close that had already marked a second session at the three-month low.

The same article compared that level with a 7,685.67 yuan month-start reference, implying a 20.93 percent decline into the current band after single-day drops of 6.94 percent on 15 October and 8.65 percent on 19 October.

SunSirs described MAP and DAP operating rates as just above 40 percent with producers losing money at prevailing input costs, a demand read that aligns with weaker seaborne pull and heavy port cover on prior desk passes.

The commentary argued the market may be bottoming ahead of late-October winter phosphate stockpiling, a seasonal demand hook Pacific exporters watch when Chinese buyers return to the import market.

Shengyishe's 20 October morning wire had already published 6,076.75 yuan for the 基准价 with Shandong industrial solid references matching the national screen at the 16:00 stamp.

Open international markers from ChemPriceHub's 15 October week still frame import parity: Vancouver FOB at 830 to 840 dollars per tonne and Middle East spot FOB ex-Iran at 740 to 790 dollars in the public roundup.

September customs data republished on 20 October showed imports of only 140,700 tonnes, down sharply year on year, while coastal port stocks near 1.12 million tonnes on the 19 October wire kept buyers patient.

Alberta block inventory measured through AER ST3 at 11.04 million tonnes in August gives Canadian exporters stock to work with when Chinese enquiry is uneven.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority's verified_public series shows 3.51 million tonnes of sulfur exports in 2025, evidence the stem can clear when replacement cost invites stems.
