Claus technology and sulfur recovery
Claus technology is the industrial process that turns hydrogen sulfide into elemental sulfur. Sour gas treating and refinery amine units concentrate H2S into acid gas. A Claus sulfur recovery unit (SRU) burns a portion of that H2S to sulfur dioxide, then catalytically reacts remaining H2S with SO2 to form liquid sulfur and water. Tail gas treating units downstream raise overall recovery to meet emissions permits.
The Claus reactor (reaction furnace plus catalytic converter stages) is the heart of each SRU train. Traders do not size reactors, but they price the molten sulfur those reactors drain into pits and tanks. Because output follows hydrocarbon throughput and gas composition, recovered sulphur supply is inelastic to spot price. An oil sands upgrader at high utilization recovers more sulphur than during a turnaround; a refinery running sourer crude may recover more than on light slate.
North American context: Athabasca bitumen upgrading (Suncor, Syncrude, CNRL Horizon, Shell Scotford) recovers large sulphur volumes beside synthetic crude production. Alberta sour gas plants and US Gulf refiners run parallel Claus trains. USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries document US recovered sulphur production as a byproduct of hydrocarbon processing, not as a primary mining business.
Downstream marketing splits into molten domestic (Tampa phosphate belt, US molten rail) and formed export (Vancouver FOB granular). Claus units do not choose the form; forming plants and logistics contracts do. When FOB prices spike, remelt and new solidification capacity draw down block inventory, but they do not add new Claus molecules.
Claus emissions and recovery efficiency matter for permit compliance and for how much elemental sulphur a site can legally recover from a given acid gas rate. That is an operations and HSE topic with indirect trade impact during outages.
Sulfur Wire's Claus process basics page walks the trader-facing chain from acid gas to marketing paths. This page targets Claus technology and reactor vocabulary for search and desk reference. No licensed PRA assessment numbers appear here.
