Sulfur degassing technology
Degassing is the step that removes residual hydrogen sulfide and other dissolved gases from molten elemental sulfur before it is formed, loaded into railcars, transferred to tanker trucks, or pumped into vessel lines. Claus plants deliver liquid sulfur that can still carry ppm-level H2S. Occupational limits, transport rules, and buyer specs all require that gas content to fall before the product moves.
Plant degassing uses dedicated vessels or columns where molten sulfur is agitated, sparged, or circulated so H2S partitions out. Keyera's Strachan upgrade publicly cited Brimrock forming and degassing for premium granules. Heartland and other Alberta formers degas before WetPrill or dry forming trains. The equipment sits between molten storage tanks and the forming unit.
Tanker truck degassing addresses the same chemistry on a road scale. Molten sulfur delivered by heated tank truck from a producer pad or transfer station may need a final degas pass before entering a forming plant or customer tank. Truck fleets serving Fort McMurray-area sites and Edmonton Industrial Heartland terminals work under Canadian TDG rules for UN 2448 molten sulfur. Solid formed sulfur has separate flammable-solid classifications; the degas requirement is about dissolved gas in the liquid phase.
Why traders care: undegassed molten can fail acceptance tests, delay rail unit trains, or trigger HSE holds at terminals. Sultran's inland forming network and PCT/Vancouver Wharves loadouts assume product that meets typical fertilizer-grade H2S limits after plant handling. A degassing outage upstream shows up as slower rail turns, not as a price tick.
Western Canada context: oil sands upgraders recover molten sulfur at Fort McMurray and Scotford; midstream formers (Keyera South Cheecham, Heartland, Sultran network sites) degas and solidify before CN/CPKC runs to tidewater. Block remelt paths degas again after melting crushed inventory.
