Phosphate fertilizer is the largest structural sink for elemental sulfur because wet-process phosphoric acid consumes sulfuric acid, and most sulfur in trade is converted to acid before it reaches a granulation plant.

The production chain runs recovered sulfur to sulfuric acid, sulfuric acid to phosphoric acid from phosphate rock, and phosphoric acid plus ammonia to monoammonium phosphate (MAP) or diammonium phosphate (DAP). Mosaic Crop Nutrition's public technical note and University of Illinois farmdoc daily (August 2026) both cite roughly 0.4 tonnes of elemental sulfur per tonne of DAP produced, alongside 1.5 to 2 tonnes of phosphate rock and about 0.2 tonnes of ammonia. The Fertilizer Institute's 2026 overview states that about four tonnes of sulfur are needed per ten tonnes of finished MAP or DAP, a similar intensity ratio expressed in bulk terms.

USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 reports that about 90 percent of U.S. sulfur consumption is in sulfuric acid form and ties domestic phosphate rock processing to sulfur demand, without publishing a single MAP-specific coefficient. Use the Mosaic or farmdoc ratio for tonne-for-tonne math; use USGS for macro production and trade context.

When Chinese MAP and DAP plants cut runs, sulfur spot often falls faster than seaborne FOB because domestic acid consumers stop bidding for port cargoes. SunSirs on 21 October 2026 described MAP and DAP operating rates just above 40 percent with theoretical producer losses exceeding 1,000 yuan per tonne, matching the demand freeze that accompanied the October slide in Shengyishe's 基准价 from 7,685.67 yuan at month open to 5,714.25 yuan on 23 October. 肥多多 survey data republished on open trade press for the week of 16 October put MAP industry operating rates at 41.36 percent and DAP at 43.33 percent.

Product prices confirm the margin squeeze: 生意社 on 22 October put Hubei 55 percent MAP at 3,613 yuan per tonne average with offers at 3,580 to 3,680 yuan ex-works, while 100ppi's 22 October DAP quote board carried one Hubei agricultural 64 percent offer at 4,600 yuan per tonne. Those are open list and market prices, not licensed weekly assessment grids.

Pacific export desks still translate the same demand shock into dollars. ChemPriceHub's 15 October international roundup cited Vancouver FOB at 830 to 840 dollars per tonne while Middle East spot FOB ex-Iran traded at 740 to 790 dollars. Alberta Energy Regulator ST3 through August 2026 shows 11.04 million tonnes of block inventory, the North American physical anchor when Chinese phosphate buyers delay import stems.
