WetPrill sulphur forming

WetPrill is a registered trade name for wet-prill sulphur forming: molten sulphur droplets fall into a water bath, solidify as small spheres, then pass through drying and screening before bulk storage. The water quench controls particle temperature and can reduce dust versus some dry-tower processes. Enersul markets the Devco II WetPrill system; Heartland Sulphur publicly associates that technology with its Alberta Industrial Heartland terminal.

Mechanically, wet prilling differs from dry prilling (air-cooled towers), belt pastillation, and rotary granulation. Each route produces a solid particle size distribution tuned for rail hopper cars and vessel holds. Buyers specify moisture, acidity, size fractions, and H2S after degassing. WetPrill product is one path to the formed granular and prill grades that clear Vancouver FOB export contracts.

Heartland states about 4,500 tonnes per day of forming capacity at its site, with WetPrill as the publicly named technology. That sits beside remelt for crushed block and bulk reclaim. Keyera South Cheecham (about 4,400 t/d forming, operations from Q3 2023 per company AIF) and Sultran's inland network add other forming routes into the same Pacific rail chain.

Throughput is customer- and price-dependent. Nameplate t/d is not annual Mt shipped. When FOB Vancouver netbacks pay, formers run harder; when blocks are cheaper to store, remelt lags. Port of Vancouver sulphur exports reached about 3.10 Mt (2023), 3.35 Mt (2024), and 3.51 Mt (2025) per VFPA Statistics Overview, reflecting formed product arriving at PCT and Vancouver Wharves.

Spelling note: trade literature uses WetPrill, wet prill, and wet-prill interchangeably. HS 2503 export statistics do not split by forming technology. Sulfur Wire uses WetPrill when citing Enersul/Heartland public materials and wet prill for the generic process.
