Sulphur solidification, prilling, and processing plants
A sulphur solidification plant takes molten recovered sulphur and converts it into a storable, shippable solid. In Western Canada that means prilling, pastillation, granulation, or related forming trains plus downstream conveying, screening, degassing, and bulk loadout. Fertilizer plants and ocean vessels generally cannot accept hot liquid sulphur across the Pacific; solidification is the commercial gate between Claus recovery and Vancouver FOB stems.
Prilling solidifies droplets (wet prill in water, or dry prill in air towers). Pastillation uses steel belts or drum pastillators to make lens-shaped pellets. Granulators produce free-flowing formed granular product. Slate and older belt-cooled fragments still appear in legacy inventory. Each technology trades dust, moisture, particle size, and capital cost differently.
Pastillation and prilling are the dominant export-grade routes for premium Pacific cargoes. Heartland's Enersul Devco II WetPrill and Keyera South Cheecham's about 4,400 t/d forming complex are the largest publicly quantified Alberta solidification additions of the 2023-2026 cycle. Sultran discloses a network of about nine inland forming sites feeding CN and CPKC toward Port Moody and North Vancouver.
Conveying connects the solidification train to storage piles, rail car loadouts, and truck bays. Bucket elevators, belt conveyors, and tripper systems move formed sulphur after screening. Maintenance on conveying and structural steel at Cheecham was reported in 2025 contractor notices; conveying bottlenecks can cap effective t/d even when the melter and former are available.
Sulphur processing at a solidification plant also includes degassing (H2S strip), quality sampling, and sometimes blending of remelt streams with fresh Claus molten. Remelt plants crush block inventory, melt it, degas again, and feed the same forming equipment. That is how Alberta's multi-million-tonne block stockpile becomes rail-ready solids when netbacks clear.
Chain summary: Claus SRU → molten storage → degas → solidification (prill/pastille/granule) → conveying → rail → PCT or Vancouver Wharves → vessel. Sulfur Wire facility pages list public nameplate capacities; actual runs follow customer programs and FOB economics.
